ChatGPT – Why Is It Worth $29 Billion?

Most of us could ramble off a list of movies about robots or AI that become too self-aware and decide they need to wipe out the human race. Whether or not those movies are any good wouldn’t matter anymore once a research company named OpenAI becomes worth $29 billion dollars. OpenAI is the creator of ChatGPT which is an AI that mimics human speech patterns and can have a real time conversation with its user. ChatGPT is currently free to use but OpenAI wants to make a tender offer to buy back their shares which they estimate would make them worth billions of dollars. OpenAI was founded by Elon Musk and while, at the time of this writing, has his hands full at Twitter I can’t say I’m surprised he is involved with this company. He does love to push the boundaries on technology no matter the cost. Regardless of Elon Musk’s involvement, OpenAI is furthering the research into AI and how it can benefit or harm us. On their website they have a research blog where they ask the important questions regarding AI; conversations like disinformation campaigns or cheating in school are among the topics being discussed. While it is interesting to consider AI and its evolution within our society one can’t help but be concerned based on what science fiction has shown us for many, many years.
