Do you know of the Droid? Google, the biggest search engine in the World Wide, is now ready to present what could be one of the newest sources of inspiration for font and logo design in the future.
Called Droid, the new font has been conceptualized for the past two years, almost the same time as the formation of the newest and hopefully one of the greatest rivals of Apple’s iPhone, Android. The font was developed by Google together with Ascender, an Illinois-based company that specializes in digital typefacing. This is also the same firm that has been tapped by other well-known font-needing companies such as Microsoft and Motorola…
In truth, the assigning of font design to Ascender comes as a non-surprise. Besides the impressive portfolio the company has developed over the years, it is also a part of Open Handset Alliance, a group of more than 30 companies that are presently working with Android. Thus, the team has a very good idea of what Android is and what it can possibly do. (Android is actually an operating system for mobile device. It is based on Linux, and is set to run together with Java-like applications that could be created by the users of the phone, which is actually dubbed as Dream.)
How The Font Was Developed
Though Google is known for their very cute and contemporary font, which can even change depending on a particular theme, they wanted something different for the Android. They want something that still remains to be appealing, yet not too techno- or controversial-looking. In other words, it should be able to capture enough attention, speak of the character of the product, and yet will not be the main reason for the product’s profits. Most of all, it should be totally friendly-looking, which will then allow their potential market to easily fall in love with the mobile device.
There were a lot of proposals that have been presented, two of which are known as bouncy and techno. Both have been rejected, though, because they are either too sweet or too stiff to look at. Nevertheless, they are able to meet in the middle and produced a font that resembles the same characteristics as that of Google, yet totally distinct and only fitting for the Dream phone.
What You Can Expect From Droid Fonts
The font design will be very rare, as only G1 (or Android) phones will be the only ones that will have them. However, it will be very conspicuous, since almost every element of the phone is based or related to Droid, from the drop-down list, maps, address book, and text messages. Even the fonts that you can see in websites will be converted to Droid fonts, which can be monospace, serif, or sans serif.
The special features of the Droid font design doesn’t stop there, though. You can easily find a host of international characters from Asian countries. If you want to access the deep mystery and solve the puzzle of the Droid font designs you will be sorely disappointed as the fonts are just fonts and have no hidden codes that need to be cracked.
